Abstract

Calderón's La hija del aire may be said to be about the feminization of the body of the king. Not only is Semíramis a supreme example of a mujer varonil because she literally becomes king when she impersonates her son, but all the male rulers in the play are presented as examples of debased or "feminized" masculinity and kingship. Of particular interest is the identification, throughout the play, of the characters' gender dissonance with theatricality and the dangers of tyranny. La hija del aire offers a performance of monarchy as a deeply unstable institution.
