Abstract

Gender-sensitive psychotherapy usually refers to therapy which is conducted with a feminist perspective regarding the realities of different life experiences encountered by males and females. This article discusses a systemic approach to gender-sensitive psychotherapy: that is, therapy which is conducted with a sensitivity to the differing perceptions of reality for men and women growing out of biological differences, male/female developmental theory, socialization in a capitalist/patriarchal society, value systems, levels of moral development, role-definitions and real power differential in the political, economic and legal arenas. All issues are interpreted systemically and non-judgementally. Male and female perspectives are given equal validity. The therapist depolarizes the couple through a four-step approach which leads to a two-winner solution.
