Abstract

Introduction Heart failure is one of the most common causes of readmission in elderly. The purpose of this analysis was to determine the temporal trends in acute heart failure admissions. Methods The national inpatient sample from the year 2002 to 2016 was used. ICD9 and ICD10 codes for acute heart failure were used to identify heart failure admissions. Pearson Chi-square test was used for categorical variables and independent sample t-test for continuous variables. Univariate regression model using demographic characters, age, gender, income, region, and race was used to identify predictors of mortality. Results A total of 11,806,679 adult weighted cases of acute HF were identified. The median age of the patients was 75 (interquartile range: 64-84) years. The proportion of females decreased from 59.0% (7847) in 2002 to 48.7% (368,7864) in 2016 (P Conclusion Overall, the proportion of Hispanics, African American and men increased in heart failure admissions. Mortality though was higher in Caucasians, Asians and men.
