Abstract

The study aims to identify role of gender in decision making and work performance of major goat farming activities. Data were collected by interviewing 60 households (30 farmers each in two villages) of adopted villages of ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Goats in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh in June, 2019. Each major farm management practice was divided into 3–4 activities. Majority of the respondents were male (86.7%), landless (83.3%), middle-aged (66.7%) illiterate (63.3%) and scheduled caste (65%) categories. Majority of them (61.7) had labour as primary and goat rearing as secondary occupation (66.7%). Men played major roles in decision making and their roles varied from 36.0 to 76.4% in different activities. On the other hand, women contributed in work performance and it varied from 30.0 to 76.4% of total work in different major activities. Only 11.6% work was performed by both the counterparts together. The study revealed that goat production activities were carried out by women whereas majority of decision in goat production activities were taken by men. Capacity development of females in a holistic manner for their socio-economic development is required.
