Abstract

In discussing gender issues in educational administration and management, there are two important areas to consider. The first relates to career paths and barriers to senior/management positions for women and men in educational organisations, particularly schools, while the second relates to effectiveness once in those management positions. This chapter focuses on the first area and asks how it is that, in the predominantly female working places that schools are, women generally occupy only the middle and lower status positions. The second area is addressed in the Leadership and Strategic Management volume of this series (Bush et al., 2002).
