Abstract

A review of the contemporary literature that influences current district nurse practice reveals that district nursing is singled out as a (female) gender role. Within this gender role, district nurses are described as acquiescent, maintaining professional role relationships that resemble the traditional, patriarchal family unit. While this gender role is maintained, district nursing is of considerable use to health care by fulfiling women’s caring role. There is a surprising lack of discussion related to gender and gender issues, suggesting that a serious debate on gender and district nursing is long overdue.
