Abstract

Despite entering medical school in increasing numbers, women remain a minority in many surgical and procedural subspecialties, comprising a mere 17% of gastroenterologists in the USA.1 The past 3 years have marked a reinvigorated focus on gender parity, with welcome efforts to improve female visibility in leadership and at conferences, and to increase authorship rates in leading academic journals.2 However, barriers to equality for women in gastroenterology persist, such as lack of pay equity, under-representation in leadership, and insufficient accommodations for child-bearing and care.
