Abstract

This paper investigated on gender identification across the first four formant frequency values and fundamental frequency of vowel /a/ in 360 Malay children in different age groups between 7 to 12. 30 males and 30 females were selected for each age group in this study. All 360 subjects were asked to pronounce vowel /a/ for 5 second and fundamental and formant frequencies were extracted. The accuracy of gender identification was calculated by using different formant and fundamental frequency values. Different combinations of formant and fundamental frequencies were also examined to get a good and acceptable accuracy on the matter of gender identification. The results showed that the F2 was the best factor in gender identification and combination of F2 and F0 improved the accuracy in Malay children.
