Abstract
Policy for gender equality is a relatively new area of social policy in Greece dating from the mid-1970s. Lack of previous experience, together with a weak women’s movement, explain why the European Union (EU) has played a major role in its shaping. The Greek women’s movement has contributed to a series of legislative reforms in favour of gender equality and women’s self-determination but has rather neglected the field of employment. Equality policy measures in this field have thus been fostered exclusively by EU equal opportunities policy.
