Abstract

With great interest we have read the recent work by Arya et al1 evaluating gender disparities in vascular surgery. The authors demonstrate that despite high proportions of women medical school graduates, few pursue surgical training. This issue is particularly relevant in vascular surgery, in which only 30% of trainees are women. More so, the number of women trainees in vascular surgery, both in integrated programs and traditional fellowships, has declined or remained stagnant since 2010. Such underrepresentation of trainees ultimately translates to practicing physicians, as only 14% of all board-certified vascular surgeons are women.
