Introduction

In 2012, the World Bank estimated that the number of the poor declined in every region for the first time since it began monitoring extreme poverty in 1981. Using the 2008 data, the World Bank stated that 1.29 billion people lived below $1.25 a day compared to the 1.94 billion people in 1981. Priviledge Cheteni is a PhD candidate at the North West University in South Africa. His PhD research examines poverty dynamics in South Africa. His research interests include developmental economics, demography, agricultural economics, climate change and environmental economics. He has published widely in various peer-reviewed journals
