Abstract

In this essay, I look at the intersection of historical memory and identity formation for descendants of the largest group of plantation laborers to migrate to Hawai`i—the Japanese. My analysis takes place through the lens of a permanent exhibit at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, where collective memory is exhibited in the Center's Historic Gallery.
