Abstract

Female adults' interest in physical activity is influenced by the gender education and physical education received in school. Government policy towards physical education is one of the most important factors influencing the nation's exercise culture and it might influence women's exercise attitude in the future after leaving school. In relation to this, it is necessary to address the development of physical education in Taiwan over the past 40 years and its consequences. This paper reports some findings from interviews with a sample of 29 female teachers in Taiwan. The results show clear indications that government policies and Western influences are changing the roles of women and challenging traditional gender norms in Taiwan.
