Abstract
A study of post-Communist transformations in Central and Eastern Europe indicates that the implementation of Western-style capitalist economies, whilst heralded as a victory for the idea and unity of Europe, has failed to deliver in terms of employment opportunities. The collapse of Communism has brought economic instability to this part of Europe, with job losses and unemployment rising rapidly in many areas of the former Communist bloc. But whilst the system of transfer has brought dismay and disruption to the region, not all sections of the workforce have been equally affected by the process of change. This chapter explores the reconstruction of post-Communist economies with the aid of the lens of gender.
