Abstract

This chapter provides a gender analysis of general elections in Nigeria, with special focus on 2015 and 2019 elections. It explores the history and development of women political participation in Nigeria, the importance of women in politics and sustainable development, as well as the challenges. The chapter reveals that while Nigerian women have made steady progress in showing interest in vying for leadership and political positions, less women are elected. Cultural, socio-economic, and party structures in Nigeria polity are major bottlenecks to the realization of women full potentials in decision making processes.
