Abstract

abstract Do socio-cultural dynamics within the domestic and social sphere determine the status of women and the differential participation of women and men in the public sphere? This briefing explores this question based on data collected from 15 different regions/areas of Ethiopia by the Centre for Research Training and Information for Women in Development (CETWID), presently known as the Institute for Gender Studies. The purpose of the research was to explore the relationship between social and gender dynamics and demonstrate women's status in Ethiopian society and its implication for intervention. The study, which took place between 1994 and 1996, was the first of its kind in Ethiopia.
