Abstract

The fact that German sociologists rarely appear in the radiology literature by no means proves that they have no place in it. In fact, invoking their perspectives can clarify and deepen our appreciation for structures and forces at work in our field that many of us fail not only to understand but also to recognize. One of the best examples is the venerable distinction between Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. The former is often translated as community and the latter as society, and these are the terms I will adopt here.
