Abstract

Gem and mineral shows provide excellent nontraditional opportunities for community education and outreach by geology teachers. Displays created for such shows need not be complex. They are best designed as hands-on, interactive exhibits that utilize the local geology wherever possible. Participating in such shows develops a good public image for geology, the university and the department; encourages specimen donations to the university; advertises the program and its courses; and allows the teaching of some basic geologic concepts to the non-university community.
