Abstract
Communicating faith in a pluriform worldThe pluriformity of the postmodern world presents the church with challenges on different levels. The theological discourse can be based on the pluriformity inherent to biblical material, as well as on the dynamic dialectic of the great variety of theologies in the Bible. The principle of symmetrical communication serves as an example of how pastoral care to a postmodern society can be approached. By making use of narrative communication, pastors facilitate genuine intersubjectivity. Preachers adhere to the principle of symmetrical communication when their sermons are characterized by an authentic spirituality and spiritual growth.

Hierdie artikel word ingelei met ’n situasie-analise om die omgewing te probeer tipeer waarin die kerk werk. Vanuit die Ou Testament, meer bepaald die Ou-Testamentiese Teologie, word aangetoon dat ’n hermeneutiek wat ’n oog het vir die inherente pluriformiteit van die Bybel, die kerk in staat stel om ’n funksionele diskoers te voer in ’n postmoderne wêreld. Waarheid is dit wat gekonstitueer en geaktiveer word binne die interaktiewe netwerk van pluriforme gegewens en deelgenote met gelyke aansprake. Omdat dit nie oortuig is van ’n absolute en finale waarheid nie, maar van ’n funksionele waarheid wat binne die interaktiewe netwerk van pluriforme gegewens gekonstitueer en geaktiveer word, is dit voortdurend in gesprek met ander tekste. Die verskeidenheid van gebruikers van die Skrif en hulle verskillende benaderings korreleer vir hom met wat in die teks aangetref word: “This plurivocal quality intrinsic to the text is deeply reflected in pluralism in interpretation, a plurality of methods, a plurality of interpreting communities, and a plurality of provisional grids of interpretation ...” (Brueggemann 1997:5).
