Abstract

AbstractA computer simulation of gel permeation chromatographic (GPC) fractionation of polymers was performed on the basis of Tung's phenomenological theory taking account of the limited resolution of GPC columns. Particularly an attempt was made to examine the effect of the limited resolution on a GPC unit which has a permeability limit and a distorted log (molecular weight) versus elution volume calibration. The results were compared with the performance of an actual GPC unit. A simple method of calibrating the column resolution was proposed: The method consists of analyzing apparent average molecular weight values (those directly calculated from chromatograms without any corrections) of a series of standard samples of known and preferably narrow molecular weight distributions.
