Abstract

Induction of labor is a commonly used obstetric procedure with a frequency of approximately 20–20 % of pregnancies. Because induction influences the natural course of pregnancy correct advice about the possible advantages and disadvantages and different methods of induction have to be given as informed consent and also documented. In addition to medical indications an elective induction on request can be a justified option. The different methods of induction, such as oxytocin, prostaglandins and mechanical methods have to be thoroughly weighed against each other and assessed depending on the individual situation. Before an induction is carried out fetal and maternal well-being, indications and gestational age have to be verified and the cervix evaluated.
