Abstract
season, and it became necessary to extend the present season to the utmost that the funds would permit. Previous seasons had been budgeted on a basis of two and a half months of actual payroll days, and in view of the new Social Insurance laws, which increase the excavator's labour bill by some twenty-five percent, considerable difficulty was experienced in making the budgeted sum extend to such a long work season, but the remarkable results of the first two months indicated the necessity of doing everything possible towards finishing the upper area of the Citadel. The Expedition staff for 1965-66 was composed as follows: N. B. Millet, director; K. R. Weeks, assistant director and physical anthropologist, Wojciech Kolantaj, chief architect; R. W. Huber, second architect and field supervisor; N. D. MacKenzie, field supervisor; A. Haller, photographer; S. L. Howe, artist; S. E. Millet, recorder; and Ahmed el-Nashati, inspector, Egyptian Antiquities Department. The work force, consisting of sixty men and boys of Quft, was in the charge of Rais Abbady Ahmed Hamid of that town. The Expedition owes a considerable debt of gratitude to Mr. Ahmed el-Nashati of the Antiquities Department for his willing help and co-operation in dealing with Government agencies and expediting our affairs under the somewhat difficult conditions that now prevail in the evacuated area of Nubia. He also took a great int rest in the work in the field, and many of his suggestions on interpretation have been inc rporated below. Our thanks are also due to the J int Venture at Abu Simbel, and most particularly to the director, Mr. Karl Maeckel, for their help and support in innumerable ways. The work carried out during the course of the season will be detailed in the following, each feature of interest being described on turn tog ther with its finds.
