Abstract

This article offers an historical overview of the design and construction of the Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire. The railway featured an innovative rack-and-pinion system which allowed steam locomotives to the climb the steep inclines. Even though the railway was completed in June 1869, it is still in use today.
