Abstract

Matthiola damascena Boiss (Brassicaceae) is an ornamental flowering plant species, distributed in the Mediterranean basin. No report described yet its phytochemical analysis worldwide; despite the important value of other Matthiola species in medicinal and pharmaceutical applications. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis has been employed to investigate its ethanolic and toluenic leaves and flowers extracts for their phytochemical constituents. GC-MS chromatogram revealed that Dodecanamide (38.233%), 9-Octadecanamide (Z)- (36.961%) and Octadecanamide (10.775%) were the most abundant compounds occurred in ethanolic leaves extracts. Whereas, 9-Octadecanamide (Z)- (74.862%) and Tetradecanamide (14.276%) were the most abundant compounds occurred in its toluenic leaves extracts. As for flowers parts, 9-Octadecanamide (Z)- (32.142% & 66.175%) and Dodecanamide (28.643% & 17.440%) were detected as the most abundant compounds occurred in ethanolic and toluenic flowers extracts, respectively. This study could be considered as the first report describes M. damascena phytochemical constituents.
