Abstract

Next generation wireless communication systems, such as 3GPP LTE-Advanced and ITU IMT-Advanced, are demanded to support 1Giga-bit per second (Gbps) peak data rate. Compared with traditional systems, 1Gbps high throughput systems have some different difficulties in system design and hardware implementation. This paper mainly presents some important design criterions and novel methods on parameter design and hardware implementation for Gbps system based on MIMO-OFDM techniques, which includes OFDM parameter choice, pilot and recourse block design, and processing speed, storage, physical layer efficiency and signal processing accuracy in FPGA implementation. Moreover, based on the described criterions, the paper proposes some available design schemes that had been applied in the Gbps demonstration system developed by us from 2007 to 2009 with the support of China high-tech projects. Practical measurement resulting from the system indicates that the proposed storage and resource block mapping schemes can simplify system architecture, lower physical layer capacity storage by 90% and improve a diversity performance gain significantly without a complex MAC schedule design. The proposed complete fixed-point scheme can efficiently reduce PAPR and generate highly precise OFDM symbols, which have been verified by simulation results.
