Abstract

In order to reduce the ohmic losses in the slow wave structure (SWS), an elliptical pillar defected photonic crystal waveguide (EPDPCW) is proposed as a SWS for the terahertz traveling wave tube (TWT). Compared with rectangular pillar defected photonic crystal waveguides (RPDPCW), the EPDPCW shows better high-frequency characteristics and lower ohmic losses. According to the particle-in-cell (PIC) results, in the frequency range of 188 GHz to 218 GHz, the saturated output power of EPDPCW is greater than 13.4 W, and the maximum saturated output power is 26.8 W at 196 GHz at a voltage of 9.78 kV and a beam current of 150 mA. Compared to the RPDPCW-TWT, the performance of the EPDPCW-TWT has been significantly improved.
