Abstract

This paper formulates some propositions about gay parents (mostly lesbians) as taken from research studies and personal accounts. To many people, the idea of a person being both homosexual and a parent is inherently inconsistent. The exact numbers are unknown, but a large percentage of homosexuals do have children. More lesbian parents than gay male parents have legal custody. The fear of losing custody is a prevailing and intense fear. Concerns about the fitness of gay parents include the following: (1) that the child will be stigmatized, (2) that the child will have sex‐role conflicts, and (3) that the home environment will be generally less desirable than a heterosexual family home. The research findings that do exist do not confirm any of these concerns. Even though gay parents usually report better relationships with their children when they are open about their homosexuality, the need for discreteness in employment, housing, and with children's friends continues to exist because of society's discrimination against gay parents.
