Abstract

Abstract Often subsumed under the broader rubric of “hate crime,” gay bashing generally denotes the perpetration of violence against people identified as, or assumed to be, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgendered (LGBT). Although examples of this type of behavior range from acts of symbolic and rhetorical violence to ongoing bullying‐type behaviors, physical assaults, and homicide, selection of the victim based on perceived non‐normative sexuality and/or gender expression is common to gay bashing in all its manifestations. This type of violence is typically aimed not only at a primary target, but also at the entire group to which the target is thought to belong.
