Abstract

The visibility of single bars with a Gaussian luminance profile was measured and compared with visibility of rectangular bars. Narrow Gaussian bars were approximately as easy to detect as narrow rectangular bars, but wide Gaussian bars were much harder to detect than the corresponding rectangular bars. More than one mechanism is required to account for the dependence of bar sensitivity on width.
