Abstract

The quantised Hall effect in two-dimensional systems in magnetic fields is studied with an emphasis on the importance of gauge invariance in this phenomenon. Theoretical aspects of the problem is reviewed and new numerical results are presented. It is shown that the quantised Hall current is fundamentally related to gauge transformation in the system, and that the quantised plateau in the Hall conduction is a combined effect of localisation and gauge invariance.
