Abstract

The use of the quantum gravity one-loop effective potential to self-consistently determine the radius of the compact dimension in M 4 × S 1 Kaluza-Klein theory is critically examined. It is explicitly demonstrated that the predicted radius, as well as physical parameters of the effective four-dimensional theory, depend on the value of the gauge-fixing parameter chosen to carry out the calculations.
