Abstract
Tube feeding in patients with dementia is controversial. Weight loss is not an inherent part of the disease but can occur early in the process. This may be because of dysphagia (swallowing difficulty). Patients are at risk of malnutrition and also pneumonia. The problem with gastrostomies may be that they are inserted too late in the disease process.
