Abstract

Pellagra in Egypt is nearly always second ary to parasitic infestation of the intestines and undernutrition. It is therefore often accompanied by other diseases such as avitaminosis and hepatic schistosomiasis. Autopsies of patients dying of pellagra re vealed atrophy and thinning of the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach.1 Gastric analysis frequently shows achlorhydria or marked hypochlorhydria which may return to normal under treat ment, but Castle's intrinsic factor is present in the gastric juice. 2 Reviewing the English literature in the English language covering the past 20 years,3. 4 I did not come across any record of gastroscopic examination in pellagra patients; this encouraged me to perform the present study.
