Abstract

Thirty-three super-obese patients underwent gastroplasty/distal gastric bypass. The follow-up was between two and 9.4 years. Mean greatest percentage excess weight loss was 80%, females losing somewhat more weight than males. Mean final percentage excess weight loss was 73%. Chronological analysis of weight loss showed that there was some slight gain of weight over the years. There were no weight loss failures within the group. Pre-operative patients who were hypertensive and diabetic became normal after weight loss. There were no metabolic alterations or deficiencies of note. The Incidence of stomal ulcer was 12% and this was adequately dealt with by vagotomy.
