Abstract

Gastrointestinal (GI) physiology is a branch of human physiology addressing the physical function of the gastrointestinal system. The major processes occurring in the GI system are that of motility, secretion, regulation, digestion, and circulation. In anesthesiology, gastric emptying and the time from last oral intake (NPO status) become important. During the induction of anesthesia the patient with a full stomach is at increased risk for gastric regurgitation and pulmonary aspiration, which can be lethal.
