Abstract

Comparing the minimal incidence of gastrointestinal cancers in Southern Iran to the true incidence of same in Connecticut, it appears that all such cancers with the possible exception of those of the colon and pancreas, are more frequent in the younger population of Iran. Furthermore, upper gastrointestinal cancers seem more frequent in Iran, and of interest is the prevalence of Primary Upper Small Intestinal Lymphoma, a tumor rarely encountered in Western countries. The explanation for the higher frequency of the said cancers is not clear but may include a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
