Abstract

Although reports differ, no clear relationship has been shown between the high acid secretion in duodenal ulcers and basal plasma gastrin concentrations. Much recent attention has focused, therefore, on the concept of greater autonomy in gastrin secretion in patients with duodenal ulcer. The principal usefulness of gastrin determinations seems to be the ruling-out of the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and in case of recurrent ulcer, in which its use is limited.
