Abstract

Gastric pyrosis associated with hyperacidity is a common symptom affecting up to 20% of the Western population. Pyrosis may depend on organic or functional digestive disorders, including gastric reflux, esophago-gastro-duodenal inflammatory diseases, dyspepsia, and gastrolesive drug use. A new medical device (Piromal®) has been recently marketed in Italy. This medical device contains tamarind seed extract, alginate, and carbonates. These components exert important activities. First, tamarind extract contains xyloglucans (polysaccharides) with mucin-like activity, acting as a protective agent. Second, alginate exerts a well-known antireflux activity. Finally, carbonates display a relevant buffering activity. These three components provide prompt symptom relief and guarantee adequate protection of digestive mucosa. In addition, tamarind extract and alginate promote the repair and regeneration of damaged mucosa. Based on this background, a practical algorithm for managing patients with pyrosis associated with hyperacidity is proposed.
