Abstract

Two patients are reported with advanced ovarian cancer presenting with symptoms suggesting gastric outlet obstruction. In each case the symptomatology and clinical findings were caused by gastric compression secondary to entrapment of ascitic fluid in the lesser sac. This complication may be suggested by an upper gastrointestinal series, but is unequivocally diagnosed by computed tomography. Resection of the lesser omentum, repeat paracenteses, or insertion of a LeVeen peritoneovenous shunt into the lesser sac may all be used therapeutically for decompression of the stomach.
