Abstract
A five-year-old boy underwent surgery for intestinal obstruction due to a volvulus of small intestine around a Meckel's diverticulum. The obstruction was relieved and Meckel's diverticulectomy and appendicectomy were performed. The macroscopically normal appendix contained deeply situated gastric heterotopic tissue—the third reported case of this abnormality. Reviewing the literature, it is clear that heterotopia is commonly associated with other congenital developmental abnormalities, but rarely occurs in an otherwise normal gastrointestinal tract.
