Abstract

The family Hysterangiaceae E. Fischer (1899: 304) was originally erected to accommodate those hypogeal basidiomycete genera with a dendroid columella extending into the gleba, thereby segregating the group from Hymenogastraceae Vittad. In addition to Hysterangium Vittad., the following genera, since assigned to the families indicated, Gautieria Vittad. (Gautieriaceae), Protoglossum Massee (Hymenogastraceae), Gymnoglossum Massee (Secotiaceae), Protubera A. Moller (Phallaceae) and Phallogaster Morgan were included. This family is now modified and restricted to a single hypogeal genus, namely Hysterangium, and two epigeal, stipitate genera, Phallogaster, allied to Clathrus Mich.: Pers., and Rhopalogaster Johnston, allied to Phallus Hadr. Jun.: Pers., and included (Svrtek 1958: 96; Kreisel 1969: 159; Jiilich 1982: 292) in the order Phallales G. H. Cunn.
