Abstract

The gas chromatographic retention behaviour of C 3C 5 saturated branched-chain, C 3C 6 unsaturated, ethyl and 2-chloro-, 2,2-dichloro- and 2,2,2-trichloroethyl esters of benzoic, 4-nitrobenzoic and 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acids on SE-30 and OV-351 capillary columns at several temperatures is reported. The Kováts retention indices for all 54 individual components are given and the retention index increments were used to examine the effects of chain branching, unsaturation and chlorine substitution in the alkyl chain and the effect of nitro substitution in the acyl chain. The results are compared with those reported earlier for the corresponding halobenzoates and n-alkyl nitrobenzoates.
