Intrinsic CO 2 gasification reactivities of fusain and vitrain chars from a subbituminous coal were measured. The vitrain char was significantly more reactive, especially at high burnout. The important differences between the gasification behaviour of the two lithotypes were due to differences in the amounts of naturally occurring ion-exchanged metals, predominantly Ca.
