Abstract

The education scheme at German Universities for Mechanical Engineers, especially for engineers for turbomachinery, is discussed. The duration of the studies is at least eight terms, divided in two parts. The first part is concluded with the Vorexamen [first major examinations] and the second is granted with the title “Diplom-Ingenieur.” Post graduate studies are possible in the institutes and often lead to a doctor’s degree. Another independent way to become engineer is at “Fachhochschulen” [technical academy]. The final degree is “graduierter Ingenieur” [ing. grad] after six terms of study. Research programs are sponsored by the government, industry or research societies. Gas turbine research is demonstrated by means of the facilities at the Technical University Hannover, Germany, as an example.
