Abstract

Abstract This paper considers several effects which occur as a result of implantation or high energy ion beam irradiation of polymers. Implantation by ion beams of inert gases appears to create occluded gas pressures, conditions inside the polymer which can lead to serious structural changes and unexpected electrical behaviour of the implanted polymer films. These trapped inert gases make the structure of the implanted polymer film very sensitive to temperature treatment.
