Abstract

The gas scintillation proportional counters are being developed which make use of the ionization and subsequent excitations of the gas atoms producing light scintillations in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum. By using suitable means the wavelength is shifted to the visible region for their efficient detection by the light sensors such as photomultiplier tube. These counters have energy resolutions ranging from 8 to 11 % for 5.9 ke V X-rays and efficiencies comparable to those of the NaI (TI) scintillation detectors. Gas scintillation counters find applications in X-ray spectrometry.
