Abstract

The effects of the plasma detonation technique (PDT) on the morphology, structure and nitrogen concentration distribution of the nitrided layer on AISI H13 steel have been investigated. The results showed that the PDT formed a modified layer on the surface of AISI H13 steel composed of a melted layer (α-Fe and γ-Fe) and a fine-grained layer (α-Fe). Although the formation of PDT-modified layer was not conducive to the nitriding process, the nitrided layer thickness increased by 40% by grinding off the melted layer.
