Abstract

Combined gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry of 13C enriched amino acids as their trimethylsilyl derivatives is reported. The 13C content of the amino acids and various fragments are calculated from relative peak heights in the mass spectra. Comparison of the values obtained indicates a 13C biosynthetic isotope effect. Characteristic relative intensities for certain fragment ions permit structural assignments. No evidence for gas-liquid chromatographic fractionation of the normal and corresponding 13C enriched amino acids was observed.
