Abstract
The limited diffusion of gases in water and the long, partly submerged herbaceous stems of deepwater rice with the normal cuticle layer of terrestrial plants obviously pose difficulties for the aeration of the plant. Part of the adaptation of floating rice to deeply flooded conditions lies in its ability to transport O2 to the submerged organs.
