Abstract
The discharge mechanism in halogen counters has been investigated experimentally. Uv photons emitted by bromine and neon resonance photons have been found responsible for the discharge propagation. Some peculiar properties of halogen counters, such as the dependence of the starting voltage on the counter parameters, the delay of the pulse build-up, the threshold oscillations and the counter dead time, have been interpreted on the basis of the discharge mechanism.
